So the wedding was great ! And I use great because I can’t think of another word to use. Having family around and one of my closest friends there too made for a beautiful day. Pictures coming soon !
Today I have another review coming your way. L’Oreal Colour Riche Collection Exclusive Red Lip Colour in Liya’s Red. This lipstick was inspired by Liya Kebede, an Ethiopian model, and so is supposed to be the perfect fit for black beauties (and whoever is reading this) I admit, I didn’t know who Liya was until I did a Google search on her.
The Colour Riche Collection Exclusive comes in a range of colours to suit a wide range of skin tones. I picked this up because I love red lipsticks and matte lipsticks. It was a lovely, rich – looking red in the tube so I assumed I would love it. But I did not. AT ALL.
I have used the L’Oreal True Match foundation and I loved it (I’m even thinking about getting another) so it’s not a case of L’Oreal products being strange to me. In fact, the reason why I bought Liya’s Red was BECAUSE I saw it was L’Oreal. So I was terribly disappointed when it didn’t turn out to be as great as I thought it would be, especially as there were so many great reviews about it.
Okay moving on…
What L’Oreal says: This red is more than your average lip shade—it’s bold, iconic, curated richness that glides on for a soft matte finish.
Additional information: Our new limited edition Pure Reds collection consists of four custom-made red shades that are tailored to four of our spokes models.
Our Exquisite shades have a matte finish with an enriching, hydrating texture. Just for you – and your smile
The lipstick ambassadors are Blake Lively, Julianne Moore, Eva Longoria and of course, Liya.
I do not agree with L’Oreal about the lipstick having an enriching, hydrating texture. Not in the least. I found that the lipstick kind of sat on my lips. It felt heavy and did not sink into my lips (I don’t know if you get what I mean?) And it was definitely NOT hydrating. In fact, I found it so drying that after it wore off, I did not reapply !
However, because it’s a matte texture it lasted about 6 hours without eating but with me drinking water in between those 6 hours. It is not transfer proof so expect to see a red lip line around your cup or mug.
The lipstick is housed in a beautiful matte black tube with gold accents that is extremely attractive (it’s one of the things that drew me to it, tbh), and it rolls fully into the tube where the cap closes firmly, with autograph of the ambassador in front of the tube.
However I took out out of my vanity one day to find that the lipstick was broken ! Man that was one of the saddest days of my life. I tried putting it together using the matchstick procedure but I found that though it worked, every time I used it, it came apart again so I’m guessing it’s not 100% perfect.
Above: one swipe of L’Oreal Colour Riche Collection Exclusive. It’s super pigmented, a warm red with neutral undertones that should be flattering on every skin tone
The application is definitely a smooth one. There’s no dragging on tugging and the lipstick has a velvety feel on the lips. Kind of like a cushion.
See how attractive the packaging is? L’Oreal gets brownie points for that ! (That’s how the lipstick ended up when I tried to mend it)
Another thing I absolutely cannot stand about this lipstick is the smell ! Oh my gosh ! It smells so way and fake, such a lipstick-y smell that is so overpowering and does not go away ! It’s such a big turn off, and L’Oreal definitely needs to check that, because people with sensitive noses aren’t going to like that at all.
This lipstick isn’t very forgiving. It settles into lines and flakes so exfoliation is key before application.
Although I didn’t really like this, I’m still willing to try the other shades in the range. I’m eyeing up Blake’s red (a pure red) and Eva’s red (dark, brick red) I don’t really like the look of Julianne’s red cos I know it won’t be very flattering on me.
Pros of L’Oreal Colour Riche Collection Exclusive Lipstick in Liya’s Red:
• Attractive packaging
• Easy application
• The smell ! It’s not a very good one
• Highlights lip imperfections
Do I recommend this? Not really. Not if you’ve got a sensitive nose, but then again you might not have the same experience as I did, so I say why not? One of my favourite bloggers, Isabella over at musings of a muse gave it such rave reviews that you can check out here
I don’t have a rating system (yet) but I’ll give it a 2/5
This a picture I took ages ago wearing Liya’s Red. (Sorry for the bad lighting) it actually doesn’t look half bad on. I’ve tried to love it but I just don’t, and now that it’s broken, I wear it even less than I used to.
Have you tried it? Loved it? Hated it? Let me know!
