Products I Regret Buying

I never thought I would have to write this particular post, but it’s about time I did, because let’s face it, not everything we buy turns out to be so great. Now some of the products in this post may surprise you cos I might have spoken pretty well on them, but frequent usage has made me realise that they actually weren’t so great at all. So without further ado, I start with…

1. CoverGirl Outlast Stay Fabulous foundation

image

Yes shocking right? Because I spoke so glowingly of this foundation when I reviewed it first but after wearing it a few times, I decided that I do NOT like this at all. First the undertones are off. I got this in the shade 365 Soft Sable and the undertones are too neutral and somehow this foundation manages to make me look flat. Coverage is super super light and contrary to what I thought, it can’t be built up, so it’s definitely not going to completely cover acne scars or hyperpigmentation. So unless you have near perfect skin, please stay away from this foundation. I haven’t used it in forever but my mum seems to like it so she’s the only one that uses it now.

2. BH Cosmetics Party Girl brush set

image

These are the very first brushes I tried, and while I was impressed at first, I now realized that I am not a happy camper. The brushes are soft to the touch, but for some reason that is the only thing I like about them. And I think a lot of the brushes, individually, are very crappy. The blush brush is total rubbish. I literally have to run it over my blush over 5 times to get it to pick up any product, and when it finally manages to, there’s fall out EVERYWHERE. Ugh. And the angled brushes are not stiff enough to be used to apply any kind of creme or gel formulation. Eyeshadow brushes are just meh. The only brush that I would say isn’t as bad is the powder brush, but hey it’s hard to mess up a powder brush huh? The redeeming qualities about them are that they are very easy to wash and retain their shape well. There is also minimum shedding. Save yourself some money and invest in another brush set.

3. Colorbox Pro Beauty Blender

image

This is not so much the on the use as it is on the quality because I LOVE this beauty blender. It’s affordable and blends flawlessly. BUT. It is of such poor quality omg. It ripped the first time I washed it and the tear has just gotten bigger with every wash to the point that it’s falling apart after barely 4 months. Definitely not repurchasing, because it doesn’t make sense to keep spending 25 cedis on a sponge that isn’t going to last. Oh and did I mention that it’s a bxtch to clean? It stains really easily. No likey.

4. LA Girl Glazed Lip Paints

image

I definitely made it clear from the very beginning how crappy I thought these were. 7+ months down the line and I still think they’re crap. I really do not see what everyone was raving about because these are just horrible. Aside from the cooling sensation which I like, this is like the worst lip product I have ever tried, hands down. I’m just going to toss these because I can’t see anyone liking them. Ugh.

5. LA Girl Pro Setting Powder

image

I loved this when I first got it. A lot. But it doesn’t seem to work as well for me anymore, which sucks big time. It doesn’t keep me matte for as long as it used to, and for some reason whenever I use it to set my Maybelline SuperStay, it looks so cakey, which does not happen when I use the SuperStay on its own. And it’s so tiny I’m running out already (but on the upside I could probably post my first empties post so yay) I don’t think I’m going to be repurchasing.

Please note that these are my experiences with these products. That’s not too say they won’t work for you because they didn’t work for me, so you can still go right ahead and try them if you want to.

Colour Correcting Featuring LA Girl Orange Corrector

If you have flawless skin, share your secret with me! But if, like me, you have been plagued with acne and as a result, have acne scars or hyperpigmentation, this post is for you.

If you don’t have flawless skin doesn’t mean you can’t fake flawless skin. That is where this handy tool comes in. Dark circles and marks have blue undertones that can only be hidden by peach or orange shades, depending on how light or dark your skin is. This is where the LA Girl Orange Corrector comes in…

image

This is described by the LA Girl website as:
-Camouflages the appearance of skin imperfections
-Evens out skin tone
-Covers dark circles
-Minimizes fine lines
-Provides customizable coverage

I love the LA Girl concealers. They’re one of the best things that ever happened to me. Although it’s sometimes hard to get the product out of tube, which is one gripe of mine. Anyway back to the corrector.

image

I don’t really have bad under eye circles but I tried it on my hyperpigmentation.

I like to push this into my skin using a beauty blender. I prefer to make this set a bit before I go in with my foundation. Just so I don’t rub it off while applying my foundation.

It does a good job of hiding the darkness in my face. However I have realised that when I sweat, the orange starts to show! It also feels heavier than I would like after I use foundation over it. All in all it’s a really good corrector and I like it enough. However I won’t be repurchasing because a good full coverage foundation can cover up my hyperpigmentation just as well. This is not to say it isn’t a good product, so you should still give it a try, you might like it more than I did!

My LA Girl Pro Conceal Stash

Hi guys! Contouring and highlighting has been the rage for a while now. For a while, I refused to be sucked into the hype, but hey, I’m allowed to change my mind right? So I picked up the LA Girl pro concealers at the Makeup Ghana Connects exhibition to experiment

image

Left to right: fawn, mahogany, orange corrector.

These aren’t my first LA Girl concealers. I wanted fawn but it was out of stock so I got warm honey in it’s place and beautiful bronze a while ago to use as a contour and highlight, but warm honey turned out to be too yellow and beautiful bronze was just not dark enough for a contour. So I use warm honey to define and clean up my brows for a pow look and beautiful bronze for spot concealing. It’s a tad darker than my skin but I make it work. I’ve been using it pretty long and I absolutely LOVE it.

image

Fawn, mahogany, orange corrector, beautiful bronze, warm honey

I did try using warm honey as a highlight but no matter how much I blended, it looked ashy and all sorts of wrong. It does an excellent job of cleaning up my brows.

image

image

These come with a brush tip for easy application. They are water based, so don’t be alarmed when you squeeze and water comes gushing out!

image

Warm honey, beautiful bronze, mahogany, fawn, orange corrector. It’s pretty clear from this just how yellow warm honey is. I couldn’t pull it off no matter how hard I try 😂

Fawn does a beautiful job of highlighting. It’s just the right shade for my skin tone and blends beautifully. No ashy mess for me sistah!

Mahogany is several shades darker than me and contours nicely. It could also be used as a regular concealer for darker girls.

Highlight blended (just in case you’re wondering, no I’m not mad lol)

Notice I didn’t talk about the orange corrector. That’s because I will do a separate post on that very soon. These concealers are very pigmented and a little goes a very long way. They do not crease (thank God for that) and can last for hours.

All in all, I’m impressed by these. And best of all they are inexpensive and accessible, mostly through online stores. I think the cheapest I’ve got one is 15 cedis (at the sale) and the most expensive, 20 cedis, which is still very affordable.

What is your contour/highlight routine? I’d love to hear from you!

Spice Up Your Look with LA Girl Flat Velvet Matte Lipstick!

If you read my review on the LA Girl Flat Velvet Matte lipsticks, then you know just how much I loved them, especially va voom! (read my original review here)

Originally I wanted 4 of them; runway, va voom! bite me and spicy and I only got 2. So when I happened upon spicy, of course I had to have it.

image

Now since I’ve already reviewed this, I’m not going to go too much into appearance and such. What I didn’t really expect was the colour of the lipstick: brown.

image

I have never been a fan of brown, so I couldn’t imagine putting brown on my face. But Oh. My. Gosh. I nearly hyperventilated. It was love at first swatch. I never expected to like a brown lipstick but this is beyond like, it’s love 😍

Lol it might sound like I’m exaggerating, but I kid you not. This is a total throwback to the nineties, and is everything I’m hoping True Brown K will be, that’s if I can get my hands on it, which I probably won’t 😥

It’ll definitely look good on everyone. And no, this is NOT a nude lipstick.

image

Feast on the chocolatey gorgeousness. I thought it looked like Sleek Smoulder (which I’ll be reviewing soon) but I realised that it didn’t after I did some side-by-side swatches

image

Top spicy, bottom smoulder.

Yes, I definitely recommend that everyone get spicy. It’s beautiful and unusual and a must-have. Definitely will repurchase. I’m on the lookout for Runway. I can’t wait to get my hands on it!

I am loving this big time!

LA Girl Pro HD Setting Powder: Worth the Hype?

I have been looking for a translucent powder to set my foundation for a while now. I had my eye on the Ben Nye neutral set, but seeing as that Ben Nye is outrageously priced in Ghana, I decided to go with the more pocket-friendly LA Girl version, which I got at the Makeup Ghana Connects exhibition.

image

It comes in a small tub with a powder puff which is pretty useless in my opinion. I’ll say why in a bit. Once you remove the powder puff, there’s sticky tape covering the sifter. Please, take this off with caution and do NOT throw it away. Instead stick it over all but 2 holes of the sifter. You’ll thank me later, because this powder gets EVERYWHERE. Like, literally. There’s so much fallout.

image

image

I apply this using the BH powder brush from the BH cosmetics party girl set. It’s finely milled and super soft. But be careful when you’re using it. I only pick up a little bit of the powder with my brush and apply to my t zone to set my foundation.

Too much of it and you’ll end up looking like Casper the anaemic ghost 😂, which is what happened to me the first time I used it. I applied it with the powder puff provided and I looked so scary in flash photography, though not so bad in person. Because it is transparent, it’s suitable for all skin tones. Yup. Even dark chocolate beauties. Just apply with a light hand because a little goes a long way

According to LA Girl: A luxe finishing powder that sets the foundation and mattifies skin. Made of 100% mineral silica, this powder is a luxurious and versatile tool that perfectly sets your makeup while evening out the complexion, softening lines and imperfections for a glowing, radiant look.
The translucent powder is a universally wearable shade . The lightweight formula can be applied on bare skin or over foundation for a flawless finish.
-Provides a natural, matte and flawless finish
-Sets makeup for a long time
-Preps and primes
-Evens out complexion

top: swatched bottom: blended

I agree with most of LA Girl’s claims. It melts into my skin and kept me oil and shine free for over 4 hours, which is very impressive for someone as oily as I am. It is lightweight, and matte but not flat. As to it evening out my complexion, I would attribute that to my CoverGirl ready set gorgeous foundation which I am totally loving (I’lI review that soon, promise!)

So far, I have been impressed with all the LA Girl products I have tried, the only exception being the glazed lip paints which sucked.

I definitely recommend this. It’s a budget setting powder and it works. I still want to get the Ben Nye though. Maybe after I’m done with my no buy. But for the moment, this LA Girl is impressing me massively. Get this for 30 cedis from Abby (Instagram) she delivers too.

Haulin’ It: Makeup Ghana Connects Booty

I am officially on a no-buy. And I mean it this time. Every time I impose a no buy on myself, I cave and get myself new stuff. I need help 😿

On Good Friday, I decided to get a few things that I’ve needed for a while (note: this was before I came up with the no-buy) so off I went to the Makeup Ghana Connects Good Friday sales. And these came home with me
